There are over 360 Magistrates Courts and nearly 30,000 acting magistrates currently working in England and Wales. They will often deal with civil cases, including; any kind of civil debts, family disputes, anti-social behaviour, and child welfare.

They also deal with criminal cases that will involve things like robbery. The majority of cases, whatever the crime, will start at the magistrate’s court and, if it proves necessary, they will be passed over to the Crown Court for a trial involving a judge and jury. Magistrates Courts make the important decisions that will determine how each individual case will progress.
